my son is in love with a woman
eight years younger than he is

like his great-grandfather who
never dreamed that the little
girl playing in the mud puddle
on the mining town streets he
had crossed an ocean to walk
would grow up to become the
love of his new American life

close up was everything and
nothing like what he expected

his life to be fair was filled with
hard work and multiple tender
joys here at this great distance
from all that he had known before
so he learned to look closely at
everything he cherished so his
eyes would be able to see it clearly

disposed

I heard a sound
like rusty gears
rubbing against
one another

an old man with
a hunched back
walked out of
the woods

pulling not
pushing a
wheelbarrow
behind him

he caught my eye
looked at me and
then looked
through me

as he crossed
the street to
walk away I
wondered what
he had dumped
