forgotten but not lost

they gave my husband a drug
before his vasectomy reversal
they promised it would make
him forget the pain that would
stay forever hidden locked
away somewhere in his brain

they gave me the same drug
when they reset and put a cast
on my dislocated broken ankle

“never mind” we say when we
choose not to put something
from our mind into someone
else’s but it’s still there in our
head just tucked into a corner
trying to stay quiet so we can
pretend it wasn’t ever there
