history at the speed of light
the White Star Club lives on
on a street formerly walked
by boots heavy with dust
from the mines where Italian
men and their brothers toiled
below to load the donkeys
my nonno shoed with his big
blacksmith hands that pulled
small but dapper Giuseppe
out of a cave-in and kept him
from losing fights in the club
even though he had lost the
contest years before for my
grandmother Amelia’s hand
