Some of us aren’t okay…

I hear you. It’s a lot. There’s SO much weight on us right now. It helps me to think of him as someone who has unwanted negative power in my life like a bad father or teacher. I think we are all being invited to go back to using the tools we used in childhood to survive. Tools that were all we had or were all we knew about because we were young. You know: closing down/being quiet/trying to stay invisible/ or picking at our own skin/eating too much/not eating enough/anything to feel we are in control or lashing out at others because we feel so angry and scared. It’s an opportunity to notice our own behaviors AND to be extra kind to ourselves. Just like any bad authority figures from our childhood invited us to feel helpless or worthless. This is not true. We are worthy. Reality means there are many things out of our control but how we view ourselves and how we choose to nurture ourselves through all of this is our choice. It’s okay to feel all the feelings. It means we aren’t blind or crazy. Hang in there.

Perhaps think of figuring out how to respond to our current political situation as learning a new language. The language of self care, survival, connection to others who are like-minded, and continued joy where we can find it. It takes time to become fluent. Practice being kind to yourself. Practice being brave in tiny ways. …and by brave, I mean brave enough to continue on even though it’s overwhelming.
