The Growth Cycle of a Girl

I remember when safety felt
like listening to the rain as I
fell asleep in the backseat.

I remember when desire was
wanting someone to want me
more than I wanted myself.

I remember when being a girl
meant no one wanted to teach
me what I most wanted to learn

I remember getting an education
by watching grown women play
games I didn’t want any part of.

I remember the innocence of
sleep and reading books under
the covers that fed my soul.

I remember knowing I needed
to find a way to let the glorious
energy inside of me come out.

I remember when I understood
that the person I needed to love
me was and had always been me.
