the war against grief

many of us fight grief
mistaking the doors
it crashes open in our
walls as a full frontal
attack

grief helps us to move
on without forgetting
it turns old pains and
beautiful moments into
small pebbles we can
rub when we want to
remember

we fear grief because it
can bring us to our knees
but so can a sunset or
a whirling hummingbird
surrender
