You Complete Me

Remember that infamous movie line? The one that told us we need to find that one special someone who will complete us? While there’s nothing wrong with looking for love or dreaming of finding our perfect match, that’s not the bill of goods that line is trying to sell us. If we buy into its implied message we’ll begin to believe it’s someone else’s job to complete us. It isn’t. We are complete even if we have been taught that we are not. Love in any flavor when it’s real and true is about someone helping you to be brave enough to access all the best parts of you, and to learn from your own darkness. That’s what makes us complete. We can do a lot of that work on our own, but finding a person we can trust whose vision is clear enough to really see us can help us to see ourselves. “Thank you for helping me complete myself” isn’t quite as catchy, but this is real life not a movie poster. So eat your popcorn, enjoy the show, and remember to look inside yourself not just at the screen.
